About SBP Certification
Sustainable Biomass Program (SBP) is industry-led initiative formed to ensure that woody biomass producers comply with the legal, regulatory and sustainability requirements for European power generators. SBP certification program helps in demonstrating that woody material is sourced responsibly and can be tracked efficiently through the supply chain. Also, the SBP framework helps guarantee accurate transmission of energy and carbon data across the chain of custody to the end user, supporting national greenhouse gas reduction efforts. SBP also complements requirements for sustainable feedstock and chain of custody from existing forest certification schemes (FSC, PEFC etc.).

European Union Renewable Energy Directive (RED)
According to the European Union Renewable Energy Directive 2009/28/EC, biomass produced sustainably for use in the EU countries for production of liquid and transport biofuels may only qualify for tax deductions, receive feed-in tariffs, or be counted towards renewable energy targets.
The EU RED aims to ensure that biomass is not produced by the destruction of primary forest, mangroves, biodiversity hotspots or wetlands. Futhermore, the EU RED mandates that the net greenhouse gas emissions associated with the use of certified biofuels shall be at least 35 percent lower than GHG emissions related to the use of fossil fuels.
