ISCC Certification can be applied to all kinds of biomass and bioenergy as well as for biomass-based products in the food, feed and chemical industries. European Commission recognised ISCC as one of the first certification schemes
European Union Renewable Energy Directive (RED)
According to the European Union Renewable Energy Directive 2009/28/EC, biomass produced sustainably for use in the EU countries for production of liquid and transport biofuels may only qualify for tax deductions, receive feed-in tariffs, or be counted towards renewable energy targets.
The EU RED aims to ensure that biomass is not produced by the destruction of primary forest, mangroves, biodiversity hotspots or wetlands. Futhermore, the EU RED mandates that the net greenhouse gas emissions associated with the use of certified biofuels shall be at least 35 percent lower than GHG emissions related to the use of fossil fuels.
