About Bonsucro Certification
Bonsucro is an international not-for-profit, multi-stakeholder organisation established in 2008 to promote production and processing of sustainable sugar cane. Bonsucro aims to reduce 'the environmental and social impacts of sugarcane production while recognising the need for economic viability'. Bonsucro Certification demonstrates the sustainability of the cane sugar produced and processed as per the Bonsucro standard criteria. Bonsucro certification enables for meeting the policies of large-scale sugar buyers seeking suppliers who support sustainable production practices. The Bonsucro standards qualify sugarcane biofuel producers, mills and processors under the sustainability targets set by the European Union's Renewable Energy Directive (RED).
Bonsucro certification is for
Individual or group producers of sugar cane, processors in the supply chain, can get Bonsucro certified. Bonsucro Certification can be used to demonstrate compliance with sustainability requirements and GHG emissions. European Commission recognised Bonsucro as one of the certification schemes to demonstrate compliance with the EU Renewable Energy Directive’s (RED)requirements.
European Union Renewable Energy Directive (RED)
According to the European Union Renewable Energy Directive 2009/28/EC, biomass produced sustainably for use in the EU countries for production of liquid and transport biofuels may only qualify for tax deductions, receive feed-in tariffs, or be counted towards renewable energy targets.
The EU RED aims to ensure that biomass is not produced by the destruction of primary forest, mangroves, biodiversity hotspots or wetlands. Futhermore, the EU RED mandates that the net greenhouse gas emissions associated with the use of certified biofuels shall be at least 35 percent lower than GHG emissions related to the use of fossil fuels.
